What is the National Coaches Institute?
The National Coaches Institute (NCI) is a “train the trainer” program for coaches to build skills to effectively lead and mentor high school student-athletes. SportsChallenge created the NCI to teach coaches the leadership skills and methods that inspire the best in them, their teams and their student-athletes. Each coach leaves the NCI with actionable tools and real insights to create positive outcomes in their schools and communities.
What is the NCI Campaign?
SportsChallenge seeks 15 visionary donors to support the transformation of the successful 2011 NCI pilot into a full-fledged SportsChallenge program to influence coaches for years to come.
What do you seek from the Founders?
We seek $1500 over a two-year period from each Founder to allow SportsChallenge to:
- Support coaches from nonprofits and urban public high schools that cannot afford professional development.
- Keep tuition reasonable for schools with small professional development budgets.
- Finance travel fees for our expert panelists (professional sports psychologists, college counseling experts, keynote speakers)
- Continue the NCI program assessment (self-evaluation and attendee evaluation)
- Continue program development
Why create and support the NCI?
Traditional coach workshops are sport specific and focus on techniques and “x’s and o’s.” There are few programs that address how to effectively work with and mentor adolescents. SportsChallenge uses a research-based approach to motivate student-athletes and teach life-lessons through sports. The NCI program is applicable to high school coaches from all sports.
What are the NCI program details?
High school coaches from around the country spend four days immersed in an intensive program. The NCI has the intimacy of a retreat, but includes the breadth of conferences. The sessions cover the three pillars of the NCI: leadership development, culture creation and sports psychology tools. Experts lead the sessions using real experiences based on the latest research. Each coach can tailor a program from the concurrent sessions to fits their interests, needs and experience level.
Who runs the NCI?
Four former collegiate athletes and career educators spent two years preparing the core curriculum for the NCI. They combine years of coaching experience with the skills of effective educational facilitators. Nationally recognized speakers complement this team for panels and lectures on sports psychology, college recruiting and team culture creation.
